Macaroni & Cheese

For the longest time Sarah & I have been trying to get Riley to eat a more varied diet. I’m talking normal food. Stuff like Macaroni & Cheese.

Riley would always turn his nose up at the prospect of eating it. He wouldn’t even try it. Any pasta for that matter. Made feeding him a joy, since we eat a lot of pasta. WHAT KIND OF KID DOESN’T LIKE PASTA?!?

One day I just got fed up with it. I didn’t feed him lunch for a while, to make sure he was good and hungry. Then I gave the kids bowls of mac and cheese.

Sly dug in. He loves the stuff. Riley of course took one look and started crying. Sly and I just kept eating, and watching Riley of course.

Finally, hunger got the best of him; he picked up his spoon, and started moving it towards his mouth. He stopped an inch away. Crying.

Now, of course he’s not in any danger, he’s just mad, so I’m trying not to laugh my head off. He’s just sitting there, with his spoon an inch away from his mouth, eyes screwed tight, screaming his head off.

Finally, hunger won! He put the spoon in his mouth, and closed it. He sat there for a second.

He then opened his eyes, and started shoveling the food in his mouth.

I know a lot of what kids go thru in their exploration of likes/dislikes of food is visual, but that’s been one of the biggest hurdles in getting Ry to eat a lot of what we do. It’s like “Just taste it, buddy! Once you do, I know you’ll love it!” and then he doesn’t. It was awful to cook for him, and have him take one look at his meal and start crying.

Just yesterday he ate a bowl of spiral pasta and sauce, something he would never do before. I just hope he’s come out of this ‘food fugue’ for good.
